The root that screams when pulled

Mandrake

The mandrake legend: when its root is pulled from the ground it screams, and whoever hears the sound goes deaf or dies. So the root was tied to a dog, and the sound was drowned out with drums; the scene is pictured in a Dioscorides manuscript. In the Torah, Rachel and Leah trade mandrakes, and Leah has a child. Note: mandrake is very poisonous.
