Plants that teach

Mapacho

In the Peruvian Amazon, a person who wants to become a healer enters a “dieta”: alone in the forest, they take one or a few plants each day and avoid salt, sugar, fat and alcohol. These are called “plants that have a mother”, because they are believed to teach. Shipibo-Konibo healers say one of the strongest is mapacho tobacco: its mother appears in dreams as a large, dark man in silver clothes.
