Salamat: the wheat soup of birth

Among the Sakha (Yakut) Turks, three days after a birth the women held a farewell ceremony: they laughed together and smeared butter on their faces. For it a soup of boiled wheat was cooked and eaten together; it was called salamat. In Anatolia, the “tooth wheat” boiled and shared out when a baby’s first tooth appears is another birth custom tied to the same grain.
