Syrian rue on embers, smoke in the rooms

Syrian rue

In Mut, Mersin, Syrian rue seeds are burned with salt on embers, and the smoke is carried through every room of the house against the evil eye. A local saying: “A snake visits a hundred houses in one night, but not the house with Syrian rue.” In Karaisalı people jump over the smoke, and the ash is buried far from the house. Note: Syrian rue seed is poisonous; it is especially dangerous for pregnant women.
