The root that dyed the world

The dye known in Europe as “Turkey red” or “Edirne red” was obtained from the root of madder. In the 1700s Anatolia alone supplied two-thirds of the world’s madder; the best came from the Bakır çayı plain in Kırkağaç and was known as “Bakır.” After the dye began to be made synthetically in 1869, this trade soon died out.
