The stone that brings rain

Kaşgarlı Mahmud writes that in the land of the Yağma he saw with his own eyes snow brought down with a stone in midsummer and a fire put out. This was the yada stone: dipped in water it was believed to bring rain, hung on a horse’s mane a cool wind. Babur too tells in his memoirs how Tokhta Bugha Sultan “made yada” and wind and rain followed. Those who used the stone were called yadacı and kept apart from the kams.
