Wishes tied to mulberry branches

Making a wish and tying a cloth to the branches of a mulberry tree is, according to Ülkü Gürsoy, a custom rooted in the old Turkic tree cult. In the Alevi-Bektashi tradition the mulberry tree kept its sacredness and was regarded as “the soul of the house.” Many things we call “custom” today have roots that reach back to the steppe.
