Milk from the root: mountain gum

In Diyadin and Doğubayazıt, “dağ sakızı” (mountain gum, Scorzonera latifolia) is made like this: the root is cut, the milky sap that flows out is collected in a jar, boiled while being stirred and left to harden. The resulting gum is chewed for stomach ache. What is made from the plant is not a “medicine” but a craft product.
