The carat is a seed

Carob

The jewelers’ “carat” comes from the carob. Its seeds were once used as a unit of weight by jewelers; the word comes from the names given to the seed, Arabic qirat and ancient Greek keration. Today one carat, used in weighing diamonds and emeralds, equals 0.2 grams.
