Penç (rosette)

A flower seen from above: a round centre with petals around it.

What does it mean?

Penç is a central flower motif formed by fully stylising the view of any flower from above: a round centre with petals around it [1][2]. In Persian “berk” means leaf; combined with Persian numbers it gives the number of leaves. Because the five-leaved one (pençberk) is used most, the motif’s name has remained “penç” (five); the four-leaved penç is used rarely because it resembles a cross [1]. A penç can be drawn single or double-layered (katmerli) and is considered part of the hatayi family [2].
