Herbs for urinary tract infections and the kidneys
Cranberry is one of the best-evidenced herbs for preventing urinary tract infections. But no herb treats an existing infection; it does not replace antibiotics.
In short
A Cochrane review showed that cranberry helps prevent recurrent urinary tract infections. Bearberry may be used only briefly and only after a doctor has ruled out infection.
The plants, strongest evidence first
Bearberry Arctostaphylos uva-ursi
Recognised for short-term use in mild urinary complaints after a doctor has ruled out infection. Do not use it for more than a week.
Stinging nettle Urtica dioica
The leaf is recognised for traditional use as a diuretic.
Chanca piedra Phyllanthus niruri
A few small studies suggest it may help small kidney stones pass; evidence is limited.
