Herbs for constipation and what to watch for
Herbs used for constipation fall into two groups: fibre-rich plants that add bulk, and laxatives that stimulate the bowel. Fibre can be used safely for a long time; stimulant laxatives only briefly.
In short
For long-term use the best choice is fibre such as flaxseed. Senna works but should only be used for a few days. Drinking aloe latex is not recommended.
The plants, strongest evidence first
Flaxseed Linum usitatissimum
The European Medicines Agency recognises flaxseed for well-established use in constipation. Always take it with plenty of water.
Senna Senna alexandrina
Accepted for short-term treatment of occasional constipation. Do not use it for more than a week; using it to lose weight is dangerous.
Aloe vera Aloe vera
The yellow latex of the leaf is a strong laxative; it causes diarrhoea, cramps and potassium loss, so drinking it is not recommended.
