Herbs for period pain and premenstrual syndrome
Some herbs used for period pain and premenstrual complaints are supported by controlled trials. Others need care because of their hormonal effects.
In short
For premenstrual syndrome the strongest evidence is for chasteberry extract. For period pain, fennel is accepted in Europe by tradition.
The plants, strongest evidence first
Chaste tree Vitex agnus-castus
Standardised chasteberry extract reduced premenstrual symptoms more than placebo in several controlled trials. Because it acts on hormones, it can interact with the contraceptive pill.
Fennel Foeniculum vulgare
The seed is recognised in Europe for period pain.
Yarrow Achillea millefolium
Recognised for traditional use in period pain; it should not be used in pregnancy.
